Undoubtedly, This Is the Vibrant Rainbow-Adorned Path We Envisioned in Our Childhood Dreams

.
Filmmaker Daniel Mercadante has turned rural landscapes into magical terrains with his long exposure photography series, Rainbow Road. This mesmerizing collection of images features a multicolored neon trail that illuminates the landscape, giving it a surreal and dreamlike quality. The rainbow road seems to take on a life of its own as it winds its way over quiet hills, weaves through forest trees, and playfully twists around street corners.
The series bears a striking resemblance to a real-life Mario Kart race track, and the magic behind it lies in a custom-built lighting rig adorned with rainbow-colored gels. As Mercadante traversed the landscape with this unique rig, his camera—set to a slow shutter speed—captured the scenes, creating a stunning visual effect that blurs the movements into one long, vibrant rainbow road.

While Daniel Mercadante is primarily known for his work in filmmaking, often collaborating with his wife Katina as The Mercadantes, this foray into still imagery was a welcomed challenge. He shared his thoughts, saying, “After so many years focused on the moving image, I’ve struggled with singularly caught moments in still imagery—so I love how this project still requires images to be captured over 15 seconds to 1 minute, so in some way, they require the same passages of time that a shot in one of our short films might.”

So far, Mercadante’s enchanting rainbow roads have graced the landscapes of the Connecticut countryside and Guatemala. The artist aspires to continue this captivating series in various locations across the world, promising more dreamlike journeys along neon trails that beckon us to revisit the vivid dreams of our childhood fantasies.
