This House Built on Extremely Steep Swiss Mountain is Just Incredible

Perched at an astonishing height of 4003 meters (13133 feet) in Switzerland, a remarkable house stands proudly on seemingly impossible terrain. Its location, above the clouds, begs the question of how such a structure was constructed in such a challenging environment.

Known as Solvay Hut, this small wooden house holds the title of being the highest house in the world, serving as a stopping point for mountaineers conquering the majestic Matterhorn peak in Switzerland. Situated halfway up the Matterhorn mountain near Zermatt in the Valais canton, Solvay Hut is an awe-inspiring feat of engineering.

Functioning primarily as a shelter and source of sustenance for mountaineers, this mountain hut provides a much-needed respite in the treacherous alpine environment. However, it is important to note that Solvay Hut is intended for emergency use only. Positioned above the Hörnli Hut, approximately 743 meters below the summit, it is located 475 meters away from the peak of the mountain.

In 1966, Solvay Hut underwent a reconstruction process to ensure its continued functionality and safety. Furthermore, in 1976, an emergency telephone station was installed, providing a vital means of communication for mountaineers in need.

The house derives its name from Ernest Solvay (1838-1922), a Belgian mountaineer, explorer, and businessman. Solvay himself contributed funds toward the construction of this extraordinary facility, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
