Some Beaches in Japan Have Star-Shaped Sand Found Nowhere Else in the World
When contemplating the vastness of the universe, people often liken the number of stars to the grains of sand. However, in certain extraordinary beaches within Japan’s Okinawa prefecture, the comparison between stars and sand grains becomes more than just a metaphor.
One of these remarkable beaches is Hoshizuna no Hama, also known as Star Sand Beach, situated on Iriomote Island. As you take a leisurely stroll along this shoreline, allowing the sand to engulf your feet, you will notice something truly extraordinary. The sand on this beach is undeniably special, in a league of its own.
Upon closer inspection, you will discover that the tiny grains of sand adorning your feet are actually miniature star-shaped structures. Astonishingly, these sand particles are the remains of millions of tiny organisms called Foraminifera, which belong to the same protist group as amoebas. When these Foraminifera perish, the ocean’s currents carry their husks from coral reefs in the Western Pacific Ocean to the shore.
The phylum of Foraminifera encompasses approximately 10,000 species, each producing shells of diverse designs. Star-shaped shells, like those created by the Baculogypsina sphaerulata species, are exceedingly rare and unique. As a matter of fact, only a few islands within Japan’s Okinawa prefecture are known to possess these star-shaped sands.
However, it’s important to note that not all sandy beaches in Okinawa showcase the star sand phenomenon. The most renowned locations include Kaiji Beach on Taketomi Island, Star Sand Beach on Iriomote Island, and Aharen Beach on Tokashiki Island. Hatoma Island is another place where star sand can be found abundantly, and the more secluded islands also offer excellent opportunities to encounter this magical phenomenon.
The star-shaped sand brings joy to those fortunate enough to discover it, with its charming form. Regrettably, in recent years, the quantity of star sand has significantly declined, leading some beaches to prohibit visitors from collecting it as a memento. Therefore, it is essential to verify whether collecting star sand is allowed at the specific beach before taking any home. This responsible approach will help safeguard the existence of star sand for future generations to enjoy and cherish.
