In a heroic effort, rescue workers and volunteers battled harsh conditions to save a group of killer whales, also known as orcas, stranded on a beach near Mar Chiquita in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The rescue operation, which took place on Monday, involved pulling six of the stranded orcas back to the Atlantic Ocean, although one unfortunately didn’t survive.

 The incident began when two passersby discovered the beached orcas and promptly alerted authorities. City workers, firefighters, and marine biologists joined forces with the volunteers, totaling around 150 people. Despite lacking experience in marine rescues, their determination led them to spend over six hours using ropes to drag the three-ton creatures back to the sea.

 Despite the challenging circumstances, the rescuers’ dedication shone through. Two of them had to be treated for hypothermia, underscoring the extreme conditions they faced. Andrés Ersinger, one of the rescuers, expressed his motivation, saying, “I never thought about the cold or the effort, I just wanted to return them to the sea.”

The cause behind the pod’s beaching remains unclear, although it’s speculated that they might have become disoriented. Tourism secretary Flavia Laguné mentioned that the orca that died would undergo an autopsy, although none of the creatures appeared to be ill.
