Measuring twelve feet in length and adorned with battle scars, Brutus showcases his fearsome jaws and rows of razor-sharp teeth, providing a spine-chilling view of what it’s like to be his prey.
These incredible close-up images and slow-motion video footage were skillfully captured by London-born photographer Euan Rannachan. The 1,500-pound predator is seen circling in close proximity to divers off the Mexican island of Guadalupe. His scars and wounds serve as a testament to his history of underwater skirmishes, leaving little doubt that his adversaries fared poorly in those encounters.
Euan revealed that initially, Brutus seemed uninterested in the bait lines set up to attract sharks. However, the situation took a heart-pounding turn when a seal taunted the massive shark, prompting Brutus to make a menacing lunge toward the camera.
Euan described the experience, saying, “This shark’s name is Brutus, and as you can see, he lives up to his name. At the time, he had those fresh gashes on his face from what looked like dinner the night before. He had actually not seemed too interested in our bait lines and had made a couple of passes to investigate. It was not until a seal from the shore showed up and started spinning circles around him. You could tell he became annoyed and decided to go for the bait soon after.”
Seals are a favored meal for great white sharks, which also prey on sea lions, dolphins, and other sharks. Guadalupe Island is known for being an ideal location to observe these apex predators, including Deep Blue, a 20-foot, 2.5-ton female considered the world’s largest great white shark.
Euan also organizes cage diving trips to the island, allowing people to witness these magnificent creatures up close. He emphasized that these encounters provide a genuine perspective on sharks, dispelling Hollywood myths. Sharks are naturally curious about human activity in the water but lose interest when they realize humans are not on their menu.
