A group of astonished dolphin spotters had an unexpected and morbidly rare experience during a recent sunset dolphin-watching cruise off the West Wales coast. On August 22, as the group returned to the Ceredigion shore, they were met with a startling scene of eight bottlenose dolphins engaged in a seemingly aggressive attack on a much smaller porpoise.

Passengers were left shocked by the pod of dolphins charging towards the defenceless porpoise (pictured).

The tourists, accompanied by SeaMôr wildlife guides Andy Walsh and Josh Pedley, were taken aback by the unusual and distressing sight. Brett Stones, the owner of SeaMôr, described the incident as “morbidly rare” and emphasized that it was a shocking event to witness.

The porpoise, seemingly defenseless against the relentless assault by the dolphins, sought refuge under the tour boat multiple times in a desperate bid for safety.

Some passengers wanted to offer the animal a 'cwtch' (hug) during the 'traumatic' event according to SeaMôr owner Brett Stones

Porpoises, small aquatic mammals and a type of toothed whale, are already endangered, with up to seven different species facing threats. The incident witnessed by the tourists highlights the often brutal reality of the animal kingdom, where survival instincts can lead to unexpected and harrowing encounters. While reactions on social media varied, with some expressing heartbreak and sadness over the porpoise’s fate, others recognized the stark but natural aspect of life in the animal world. The event serves as a reminder of the complexities and sometimes harsh realities of the marine ecosystem, even during what should have been a peaceful dolphin-watching excursion.
