The English language can sometimes be a very strange thing. Two words that can be spelled and sound exactly the same can still mean two entirely different things.
This being the case, let’s remember that birds often colloquially known as “Tits”, having nothing at all with the other well-known colloquial use of the very same word.
It is funny, though, and truth be known, I don’t think these birds care at all!
The word “Tit” is actually just a shortened form of the word “Titmouse,” which is, in fact, a mangled form of the Old English word “Titmase.”
If it’s tiny and cute and sort of sounds similar, then people are going to start shifting “mase” to “mouse.” Because that is the science of cute things.
In North America, these birds are often called chickadees, for their familiar songs. Which is also a cute name, but not nearly as funny.
So back to the subject of this particular article: the White-Browed Tit-Warbler.
I may quibble with the name, especially how it focuses on the least prominent feature of this beautiful bird, but you can’t deny that it’s stunning.
