An awe-inspiring moment of nature’s beauty was captured as a group of humpback whales engaged in the mesmerizing behavior known as ‘bubble feeding.’ The remarkable scene, documented by the New England Aquarium, showcases four massive humpback whales performing this intricate feeding ritual off the coast of Massachusetts.
The breathtaking photographs display the ocean’s surface adorned with bright turquoise plumes as the whales create concentric circles through their bubble-creating technique. This remarkable event took place just south of Martha’s Vineyard, providing a rare and captivating sight for observers.
Experts from the New England Aquarium emphasized the rarity of the sighting, particularly noting that one of the whales, known as Salt, is estimated to be over 50 years old. Salt, named due to her distinctive white speckles, has been recognized as a unique humpback whale since the 1970s. Her easily identifiable markings on the underside of her tail allowed researchers to distinguish her during this sighting.
Salt, a remarkable and iconic female humpback whale, has given birth to an astonishing 16 calves throughout her lifetime. This particular sighting of her engaging in bubble feeding alongside three other whales provided an exceptional treat for the survey team.
